It was lively in Kilfenora on St Patrick’s Day, 2016.
After mass, musicians gathered as is our tradition at Kilfenora Cathedral to honour the late Kitty Linnane – the mainstay of the Kilfenora Céilí Band for 40 years. After that they repaired to Linnanes Pub, where a mighty music session continued until nearly midnight. See here for pictures.
The Parade began at 12.00, progressing through the crowd from Vaughans pub up Main St to the Square to the Lisdoonvarna Road, and back. As always there was a prize for the best float, this year’s winner being the ‘Keep Rural Ireland Alive’ entry (echoing Dr Harty’s success in the General Election) – although everyone was a winner just taking part. Meantime a cake sale took place in Kilfenora Hall – proceeds were donated to the maintenance of this vital community amenity.
Finally, the traditional Michael Hegarty memorial football match was revived, featuring past and present members of Kilfenora’s football teams. It was held at the Deanery playing fields (out on the Doolin Road) at 3.30 pm, to mark the opening of the Club Room at the Sports pavilion with a showing of photographs.
