Each year, one of the talented young musicians attending the Meitheal Summer School wins a prize to make an appearance at the Kilfenora Traditional Music Festival.
Last year’s winner was 12 yr old Tiarnan O’Connell, All-Ireland champion on mandolin.
This year we featured Seamus O’Gorman, winner of the All-Ireland Under-12 fiddle prize at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Sligo in 2014.
He played a brief selection to open the Noel Hill and Tony Linnane concert on Saturday 24 April in Kilfenora Hall. He was accompanied by Padraic O’Reilly, one of Ireland’s top pianists and ceili band leaders, and by his sisters Sarah (17) and Ellen (12) on fiddles for his last set.
Seamus comes from a highly musical family in Waterford – his younger and older sisters have also won All-Ireland titles at their age levels. Seamus and Sarah also contributed to the All-Ireland 2015 (O18) win by Clare’s Tigh na Coille Grúpaí Ceoil.
