Ann Droney Kirrane in concert at Kilfenora

Belharbour-born singer Ann Droney Kirrane appeared on Saturday 27th April at 8.00 pm in Kilfenora Hall as part of the Kilfenora Music Festival 2013.

This was a very special event for Ann – and a homecoming – as she grew up playing concertina with members of the Kilfenora Céilí Band, such as Kitty Linnane, Tommy Peoples, Paddy Mullins and her father Chris Droney.

Chris – Clareman of the year and 9 times All-Ireland concertina champion – was a special guest at the Kilfenora concert, along with two other members of Ann’s illustrious musical family, brother Francis Droney on concertina, and Áine McGrath on fiddle.

Ann’s early years were steeped in the musical traditions of North Clare, where her family life revolved around the tunes and the concertina. She later moved to Tuam, Co Galway, and developed as a fine singer. Her debut CD “One Small Star”, produced by Seamie O’Dowd of Dervish fame, was launched at the 2012 Ennis Trad festival, and received wide praise.

Her repertoire is a sophisticated blend of traditional folk through to jazz, while her engaging stage persona creates a charming and entertaining atmosphere for her concert appearances. Her soaring voice can be heard to good effect on the YouTube video below and on her website. You can see her playing in Dublin with Francis and Áine on YouTube.

This unique event at the Kilfenora festival brought Ann Kirrane’s music home. This was her first concert in her home county after a year of touring in both the United States and continental Europe, and her first chance to unite her own repertoire of songs to the ageless heritage of her family’s musical legacy.
