Kilfenora staged its fifth annual traditional music festival from Thursday 25 to Monday 29 April 2013. As always, there was a feast of set-dancing – in the home of Irish céilí – and of course the legendary Kilfenora pub sessions.
However, this year there was also feature a wider range of activities, as part of the Ireland-wide ‘Gathering’ that places special emphasis on welcoming friends and family from afar.
Events include a star-studded and unique concert on Saturday featuring the Ann Kirrane band and other celebrated members of the Droney family (see separate page), a Sunday lunchtime concert in association with Riches of Clare, céilís featuring the Abbey and Four Courts céilí bands, and music sessions in the village pubs throughout the weekend with many fine musicians from North Clare and beyond, including numerous All-Ireland winners. There was also be a free open-air céilí with the mighty Kilfenora Céilí Band in Kilfenora Square on Sunday afternoon. This was broadcasted as a live video on The Gathering website and on Aer TV.
At the Singers’ Night session on Friday in Linnanes pub there was a host of great local and invited singers will be there.
For the benefit of both local and overseas visitors, there was be a film show on Thursday about the Kilfenora Ceili Band, with the film producer attending. On Sunday morning there was an Aifreann Traidisiúnta, a mass with traditional music.
Clare FM broadcast live from Kilfenora on Friday 26 April (19.00-21.00) – which was available world-wide on the internet – honouring members of the Kilfenora Ceili Band from the 1950s-70s, and also celebrating up-and-coming Kilfenora musicians. Click here to download the podcast.
